STEM DayOn Friday, March 7, 2025, Hill College hosted its second annual GIRLS (Groundbreaking Innovators Research and Leading in Science) STEM Day, sponsored by Lonestar Education and Research Network (LEARN), as part of the state’s initiative to recognize and encourage girls in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics.*

In 2019, the Texas Legislature passed a bill designating March 1 as GIRLS STEM Day to encourage girls and women in these educational and career paths—2025 marks the fifth year of this statewide annual event.

The Hill County Campus hosted nearly 80 students and 16 adults from partner school districts and homeschools. Participants explored subjects from biology and chemistry to computer and environmental sciences, morse coding, math, physics and engineering, and welding. Students learned about DNA and were able to make necklaces based on their own DNA structure. They learned about deciphering codes, 3D printing, the titration of acids, the chemistry behind static electricity, the ecology of water absorption by plants, and other topics.

Featured guests included Karole Bowers and Kaylin Garcia from the Prairielands Groundwater Conservation District; Mitchell Bergman, Amy George, and Paul Knaack from RobotLAB.

“It was so much fun to watch the students, their parents, and teachers enjoying STEM Day,” said Dr. Alisa Carter, dean of STEM at Hill College. “They laughed, cheered, and genuinely enjoyed a day of learning. Many thanks to the volunteers who made this day happen!”

The STEM Pathway prepares students for careers in science, information technology, kinesiology, engineering, and mathematics. Hill College STEM students receive the foundation necessary to continue to a four-year institution to further their education. This pathway leads to a wide range of professions, opening doors for opportunities in research, development, and innovation.
